HeliumAP is a subset of M.E's Helium fabrics program, where ‘AP’ denotes air permeability.
HeliumAP has been exclusively developed by Mountain Equipment in conjunction with their fabric mills.
Fabrics which are air permeable offer significant advantages in active insulation because of their improved breathability.
However, they tend to suffer from decreased strength as the yarns used to make them have to be woven less tightly than regular shell fabrics.
To ensure the perfect blend of air permeability and strength they have woven their fabrics with different weave densities in the warp and weft directions, ensuring that air can pass through the fabric, but without the fabric’s mechanical performance being affected.
This means you maintain strength, improve breathability, and have the soft handle of a premium shell fabric
Octayarn, a unique fibre from one of Mountain Equipments fabric partners, a unique fibre ideal for use in active insulation
Octayarn has been developed to provide a modern lining fabric that insulates, wicks, and is exceptionally comfortable next to skin
M.E have pioneered its use since the fibre's development and are a close research and testing partner for new fabric developments in this area.
Octayarn is a multidentate (having many teeth, like a cog) fibre which boasts unrivalled surface area : see image
This makes it superb at wicking moisture, decreasing drying times and ensuring you stay dry when working hard
The multidentate fibre shape increases bulk, and subsequently its warmth
The fibre is also extremely lightweight, offering the thickness of an 80 denier fibre but with only half the fibre weight
Octayarn fibres are hollow, increasing their air trapping and resultant warmth, and further reducing their weight
