Celebrate Camping All Year Round
We know we’re a bit late jumping on this train but, June is National Camping Month, and it’s the perfect time to get outside with the family and enjoy the great outdoors.
Research shows that people who spend time camping are happier, more relaxed and tend to buy more bug repellant. We don’t like mosquitoes, flies and moths any more than you do, but we love camping!
A Tradition Worth Celebrating Year-Round
While June might be the official National Camping Month, the joys of camping are not confined to a single month. Outdoor enthusiasts know that every season offers unique experiences and opportunities to connect with nature. Summer camping might bring images of lazy afternoons in the lake district, but autumn, winter, and spring each have their own special charm also.
A Brief History of National Camping Month
There was a time when ‘camping’ was just called ‘being alive,’ but that all changed in the 1800s when a man named Thomas Hiram Holding began to popularise the idea of recreational camping. Camping was a part of his life, introduced to him by the rigours of the Oregon Trail. Once settled, it turned into a passion he pursued and shared with others. Thomas went on to introduce the concept of Cycle Camping, where you load up on a bike and ride until you find a spot to camp, then get up the next day and do it all over again.
The first commercial campground likely opened in Douglas, Isle of Man, in 1894 and was called Cunningham’s Camp. From this point in history, all sorts of new types of camping came into existence, from weekend family getaways to RV camping, and everything in between.
Celebrate Camping Anytime, Anywhere
Whether rafting down a river in a canoe and setting up camp in the evening or hiking into the woods far from civilisation with a backpack full of your gear, the spirit of camping can be celebrated year-round. So, as we near the end of June, remember that camping isn't just a summer activity. Embrace the changing seasons and keep the camping spirit alive all year round. Get out there and enjoy the great outdoors, every month is a good month for camping!
